Will cloud computing replace your in house servers?

Cloud computing – what does it mean? The word ‘computing’ is well understood by everyone these days, but what does ‘cloud’ stand for? Cloud computing represents a paradigm shift in the concept of business computing as done at present. According to Wikipedia, “Cloud computing is Internet ("cloud") based development and use of computer technology ("computing")”. In simple terms it means running hosted services over the internet. Yet cloud services differ from traditional hosted services on several factors. Cloud computing allows a company to pay for only as much capacity as it needs and the user requires no more infrastructure than a computer and an internet connection. Using cloud services clients can use applications without installation and access their personal files. This technology has made possible much more efficient computing by centralizing storage, memory, processing and bandwidth. Marked improvement in server virtualization, distributed computing and high-speed internet have contributed to the birth of cloud computing technology. A cloud can be private or public. A public cloud sells services to anyone through the Internet. A private cloud is a company network or a data center that offers hosted services. When a service provider uses public cloud resources to create their private cloud, the outcome is called a virtual private or hybrid cloud.

Cloud computing services have been classified in three different models based on the type of service these offer. Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) provides virtual servers with unique IP addresses and storage space as asked by the customer. Customers use the provider's application program interface (API) to work with these virtual servers and storage. Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) component of a cloud service offers software and product development tools hosted on the provider's server to allow application developers create applications over the Internet. In the Software-as-a-Service cloud model, the vendor supplies the hardware infrastructure, the software product and has a front-end interface to interact with the client. SaaS has already acquired a fair market. Services can range from human resource to inventory control to ERP. SaaS delivers a single application through the browser to thousands of customers using a multi-tenant architecture.

Benefits of using cloud services are, to name a few, no capital expenditure, pricing on pay-as-you-use basis, Minimum infrastructure of client in the form of a PC or mobile and an internet connection, can be accessed from any location, reliable and secure.

Cloud computing is still at its childhood. It is only a matter of time before your in-house servers will make way for it.
